Two schools in the Delran Township Schools have met the requirements to earn Sustainable Jersey for Schools re-certification bringing the total number of certified schools statewide to 358. The schools that have achieved certification are: Delran Intermediate School and Delran Middle School. These schools are recognized for implementing sustainability practices that enhance student learning, strengthen school operations, and serve as models for other schools across New Jersey.
“It was so much fun educating the future of our world about sustainable practices! Together, we learned, explored, and discovered simple ways to make a difference. We had a great time doing our part to help protect our planet—one small step at a time!” said Jaclyn Brown, 4th grade teacher and DIS Green Team Leader.
Launched in 2014, Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a voluntary certification program that provides a framework for pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade schools to build and sustain sustainability programs through measurable, evidence-based actions. Today, 1,237 schools participate in the program, advancing initiatives in energy conservation, waste reduction, climate education, digital learning, and other sustainability priorities.
Schools earn points by completing sustainability initiatives across a broad range of categories, with 150 points required for bronze certification and 350 points required for silver certification.
“Today’s challenges—including climate resilience, responsible resource use, and access to healthy food—call for strong sustainability literacy. Preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and problem-solving abilities to address these issues supports both career readiness and engaged citizenship,” said Randall Solomon, executive director of Sustainable Jersey. “Sustainable Jersey-certified schools function as real-world learning environments where students gain hands-on experience that brings sustainability concepts to life. Congratulations to all of the schools certified this year.”
Certification is valid for three years. Both Delran Intermediate School and Delran Middle School have earned the Bronze Award for their work for the last 9 years, making this the fourth awards ceremony for the team. The Delran Township School District serves nearly 2,900 students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade across four public schools in Burlington County, New Jersey. They have participated in the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program since 2015, at the inception of the school program. They meet with the Delran Township Municipal Green Team four times a year, to plan programming together, to benefit the residents of the town.
