Life can be lonely for United States soldiers serving overseas.
One of the most uplifting opportunities for the troops during wartime is receiving a care package – a reminder that people back home love and care about them.
Making that happen are members of the Delran VFW Post 3020, who are collecting supplies for the troops to support those who serve the nation.
“We are also collecting hats and gloves for veterans this winter,” said Post Commander Bill Barats while hosting a veterans benefits seminar at the post home along with Delran Councilman Lynn Jeney.
Barats said the troop supply drive for the soldiers overseas is very important to the post members, who will pack the donated items into care packages before they are shipped out to the troops.
Residents can drop off supplies requested by the troops at the post home on 1125 S. Fairview St., including personal hygiene items, food and snacks, clothing and powdered drinks.

During the veterans benefits presentation at the post, New Jersey Veterans Service Officer Jason M. Newman explained how surviving spouses and children may be eligible to receive assistance from the federal government.
The main thing needed is the death certificate. Death pensions for survivors must meet wartime requirements and income thresholds. Spouses are eligible to receive up to $1,700 per month and children can get up to $700 per month.
Also, under the PACT Act, the Veterans Administration has expanded health care and veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange and other toxic substances.

The Delran VFW Post 3020 is dedicated to helping military veterans, some of whom may be homeless or suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of witnessing the horrors of war. The post members are also committed to helping out the troops serving overseas now by sending care packages from home with supplies donated by local residents.
