Ahead of the September 3rd start of the school year, the Delran Board of Education gathered for its regularly scheduled meeting on the third Tuesday of the month. As the August heat simmered down to a September breeze, five key priorities were on the agenda for the evening: student achievement, college and career preparedness, student integration, community engagement, and finances and operations.
When planning for student achievement, the district’s goal is to decrease the gap in reading and math performance between different groups of students. This effort includes providing supplementary learning resources for multilingual learners.
The district additionally plans to introduce students to new courses implemented to prepare them for college and career readiness. These efforts will be orchestrated through revisions to the AP courses updated by the College Board, the introduction of a new course called Introduction to Band, and updates to unplugged learning time to diversify students’ on- and off-screen learning experiences.
Members of the Board also discussed expanding opportunities for more students in special education and English Language Learner (ELL) programs to learn in general classroom environments. With a targeted approach to supporting these student populations this upcoming school year, students will receive additional resources while spending less time separated from learning alongside their peers.
In updates for parents, the district plans to improve collaboration between schools and families, ensuring families receive current information regarding their children’s education. This effort will be carried out through greater transparency in instructional materials, which parents will be able to access in their student-parent portal.
Lastly, the district ended the session by developing a more cost-effective operating budget to ensure enough funding is allocated to educational programs, infrastructure, and facility maintenance. This conversation rounded out the evening’s meeting, highlighting the district’s latest school installations and prioritizing an efficient budget to support district funds.
In closing remarks, Board president Eileen Watcher offered special thanks to the educators who worked diligently throughout the summer to bring new and improved changes to Delran schools for the upcoming school year.
