Committee to navigate growth of new businesses

The township has announced formation of a new Economic Development Committee, a venture approved by the Harrison Township Committee.

Its main goal will be to monitor township needs and bring in businesses to focus on them. It will be the committee’s job to help develop and grow those new ventures.

The news was first shared last month on social media by township Committeeman TJ Coakley, who will oversee the new panel. Coakley, a Mullica Hill resident for 25 years, owns a business on Main Street and is a former board member of the Mullica Hill Business Association.

“Starting a business is no small task,” he noted. “It’s time-consuming and often complex. There are numerous regulations, legal steps and township processes involved, and missteps early on can be costly. That’s why a cornerstone of the Economic Development Committee’s support will be what we call the “navigator” role.

“We aim to be a resource and guide for prospective and new businesses,” Coakley added, “helping them understand the process and avoid unnecessary setbacks.”

The committee will work with the association, the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce and other development organizations to help further the goals of new businesses. But according to Coakley, it will not have the authority to meet with land developers who propose housing developments, warehouse projects or commercial centers.

“Instead, our focus is squarely on small businesses and the thoughtful use, or re-use, of existing commercial and mixed-use properties throughout the township,” he explained.
