At Harrison Township’s Pleasant Valley School, students recently learned about some of the struggles and challenges faced by children in war-torn and third-world countries around the globe, including lack of access to clean and safe drinking water, inadequate school supplies and the absence of lifesaving vaccines.

With that in mind, students from fourth, fifth and sixth grade at the school were charged with the challenge of raising money for UNICEF, in a fundraising campaign dubbed Kids Helping Kids. During the month of March, they raised funds for their grade levels, and those with the most got an extra recess period.

A total of just over $2,000 was collected, and students learned that their contributions can be used to provide more than 20,000 kids with clean drinking water, more than 2,000 with school supplies and more than 100 with vaccines.

Pleasant Valley fourth-graders collected the most money, with fifth graders coming in second and sixth graders in third.

“A huge shout out to all of our PVS family for realizing that together, our community can do big things and can show that kids can help kids throughout the world,” noted the school district on Facebook.
