Situated inside the Mullica Hill library is its MakerStudio, a free space where participants can access some of the latest technology to create art, experiment and interact with those who are like-minded.

This technology includes access to 3D printers like the PRUSA i3 MK3S; vinyl and laser cutters; a button machine; digital media conversion tools; and virtual reality head sets, among others.

The MakerStudio has been at the library for about a decade and is intended for ages 13 and up. It also hosts a series of events throughout the year.

“I do the arts and crafts events,” said the library’s media technician of digital services, Matthew Costello, “while my colleague handles the tech stuff. It’s gotten pretty big. It used to be just a handful came in, and now I have had to put a cap on things to save space.”

Among MakerStudio activities are monthly repair cafes, where partcipants can use the studio’s resources to repair items in need of upkeep, like torn clothing or a stuffed animal.

“We started doing these events every other month and they have been going good,” said Costello. “We’ve had handymen come in, Boy Scouts who come in and fix bikes and seamstresses that sew clothes.”

Other events include the monogram embroidery program, where participants stitch letters together to create works of art, and the Miniature Models and Props Painting Clubs for painting miniature figures of action figures and spaceships.

Those interested in MakerStudio must register online through the Gloucester County Library System website and are required to complete a Maker Agreement form that can be found on the studio’s web page. They must also verify their identity by presenting a library card or photo ID.

Patrons must also pass a mandatory safety training course on the MakerStudio’s technology that is by appointment only. Email make@gcls.org. Those interested in using the 3D printer can also use that email address to schedule a time. While access to the MakerStudio is free, some of the technology is not.
