Two fire calls in Harrison Township on Dec. 21 have resulted in warnings about keeping smoke alarms updated.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 7:20 a.m. to a house fire on North Main Street, where responders discovered a fire in the basement that was contained to the heater and quickly extinguished, according to the fire district. Crews removed smoke from the residence and ensured there was no extension into the duct work.
The home’s owner was asleep when the blaze broke out, according to the district, but was awakened by working smoke alarms that directly notified firefighters, without the need for 9-1-1.
Later that day, firefighters responded to another house fire at the south end of Main Street, where the owner was also awakened by smoke alarms that detected a small kitchen fire and also immediately connected with firefighters.
“Monitored smoke alarms matter,” the fire district noted on Facebook. “Two calls for service today are a reminder to all that working smoke detectors make a difference, especially monitored smoke detectors.”
