Each year on Nov. 11, our nation pauses to honor the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for the freedoms we hold dear. Here in Harrison Township, we proudly join communities across America in expressing our gratitude to all veterans, past and present, who have answered the call of duty.

The tradition of setting aside this day of remembrance dates back to 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I with these words: “On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we will remember them.”

Decades later, following the service and sacrifice of those who fought in World War II and Korea, Congress in 1954 renamed the observance Veterans Day to honor all who have worn our nation’s uniform in defense of liberty.

Veterans Day remains a time to reflect on the courage, dedication and selflessness of those who protect our country, and to remember the families who stand with them. Their service ensures that the ideals of freedom, democracy and unity continue to define the American spirit.

The Harrison Township veterans memorial at the entrance of the William Wilt Soccer Complex features Hero Lane, a brick walkway lined with engraved pavers commemorating the service of our nation’s heroes. You can purchase a paver to honor a veteran by completing this form and returning it to the township clerk’s office at the municipal building.

On behalf of our entire community, I extend heartfelt thanks to every veteran for your courage, your commitment and your enduring service to our country.
