It is my great pleasure to announce several new policy initiatives implemented by the township committee at our Jan. 21 meeting. As of today, Harrison Township proudly recognizes the service and sacrifice of residents who have served our nation by waiving and reducing certain municipal fees.
I am deeply grateful for the unanimous support of the mayor and township committee in passing these three meaningful ordinances that honor and uplift our veterans. Their steadfast dedication and shared vision made these initiatives possible. I also want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our administration for their thoughtfulness and assistance in crafting these measures.
It is through teamwork and genuine care for our community that we continue to make Harrison Township a place where every resident, especially those who have served our nation, feels valued and supported.
With the passage of these ordinances, we take a significant step in expressing our enduring gratitude to veterans, recognizing their sacrifices and contributions in tangible ways. These measures are more than policies; they reflect our commitment to making life better for the men and women who have selflessly defended our freedoms.
The veterans measures are:
- Reduced construction permit fees: Under the updated Chapter 97, Construction Codes, American veterans are now eligible for a reduction in plan review fees for residential construction projects. This thoughtful amendment helps ease the financial burdens veterans may face as they build or enhance their homes, turning their aspirations into reality right here in Harrison Township. It’s one small way to say, “Thank you for your service,” while ensuring our veterans feel supported as they shape their futures.
- No-knock registry fee waivers: The revised Chapter 155, Peddling and Soliciting, introduces a meaningful change by waiving the fee for veterans to join the township’s no-knock registry. This ensures that veterans can enjoy the peace and tranquility of their homes without the worry of unsolicited visits. This initiative underscores our belief that our veterans deserve a space to unwind and reflect in the comfort of their own homes.
- Free licensing for pets and backyard hens: Recognizing the comfort and joy that animals bring, the amendment to Chapter 79, Animals, waives annual licensing fees for veterans’ pets and backyard hens. Whether it’s a loyal dog, a cherished cat or a flock of hens, these companions provide invaluable solace and connection. By removing these fees, we aim to ease everyday costs while celebrating the role of animals in enriching the lives of our veterans.
These ordinances represent a collaborative effort to express our gratitude not just in words, but through actions that make a meaningful difference. As we move forward, let us continue to honor our veterans – not just today, but every day – with the respect and care they so richly deserve.
