The Harrison Township Recreation Commission will celebrate the arrival of spring with its annual Easter egg hunt at William Wilt Soccer Complex on Saturday, March 28, at 11 a.m.

The commission has ordered 10,000 eggs for the event, according to recreation coordinator Sharon Chew, and is anticipating about 3,000 guests. Participants will be split into age groups to make sure parents with multiple children are not overwhelmed.

The hunt is free, but attendees must bring their own baskets. Free pictures with the Easter bunny will take place at the park’s gazebo.

While the event is sponsored by the recreation commission, it is group effort: Harrison police and the fire district help put it together.

“The police department helps with the eggs and makes sure we don’t have any early birds who try to go before the bunny drops the flag to go,” said Chew. “The fire district brings the bunny to the event. One of our volunteers plays the bunny and the families love it.”

Also at the event will be representatives from the Mullica Hill ShopRite – owned by the Brown family – who will hand out water and snack bags.

The recreation commission is also partnering with Your Place at the Table (YPATT), the local food bank at Trinity United Methodist Church, to collect donations. Guests are encouraged to bring one of the following items to the hunt: peanut butter, jelly, SpaghettiOs, cereal, oatmeal, applesauce, syrup, dish soap and baby wipes.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. sharp, so Chew urges families to arrive to the designated area of the park on time so as not to be late for their group’s session.

“After the two big snowstorms we’ve had, people are excited for spring,” Chew explained. “The hunt kicks off the spring season and celebrates the Easter holiday.”

The event’s rain date will be Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m.
