Mullica Hill’s Christmas tour of historic homes will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 3 to 7 p.m.
The tour will include homes, churches and other buildings that date back to Colonial times. It will begin at Farm House Design and include locations along Main and High streets and beyond. According to event organizer Hazel Dilsaver, homes on the tour will include the Spicer House, first built in 1746 and now home to J. Downs Law, which is opening the property for the last time.
“The house is a beautiful mix of modern and primitive styles,” Dilsaver pointed out
“As the current steward and owner, Jeff (Downs) spent years restoring the interior and exterior gardens to their celebrated glory,” notes the law firm’s website, “retaining features that make this property historic and special, such as low ceilings, multiple wood-burning fireplaces, early hardware, front and rear stairways, random width pumpkin pine floors, a built-in safe and the simplicity of the woodwork from that time.”
Even older than Spicer House is the Mullica House, first built in 1704, according to the Historical Marker Database website. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
“This is the oldest home on the tour and is a mix between both new and vintage,” Dilsaver said.
Some of the tour buildings have stood for hundreds of years and survived both Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and a 2021 tornado that blew through Mullica Hill.
Buses will be available for participants, and several businesses along Main Street will have special sales. . There will also be live music. Tour tickets can be purchased in advance online at ticketleap.com.
A portion of the tour’s proceeds will benefit local food pantries, kids’ toy drives and hurricane relief.
“We’re all trying to support the community together and to bring attention to Mullica Hill,” Dilsaver explained. “It really brings people together for a good cause.”
