Richwood United Methodist Church will host its annual holiday bake shop and cookie and Christmas sales from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the church’s fellowship hall.
According to administrator Mildred Herman, the church usually sells around 1,200 dozen cookies, or more than 300 one-pound boxes. A majority are homemade by volunteers, who usually prepare for the event several days in advance.
“But the big draw every year is the cookies,” she said. “We have a large variety of cookies, baked by church members. They usually include the brown cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, etc.) and the pretties (spritz, iced cut-outs, Russian tea cakes, chocolate crinkle, ricotta, etc.).”
The event will also include about 15 craft vendors, according to Herman. This year will see crocheted crafts, beauty items, candles, Tupperware, Avon products, Pampered Chef products, Scentsy candles and MaryKay, L’Bri.
Breakfast and lunch will be served. A separate bake table will offer other baked goods such as pies, chocolate covered pretzels and pre-boxed cookies.
Richwood UMC first began the cookie sale in 2002, as a way to help provide funds for building its fellowship hall.
“We sold ‘pick-your-own’ cookies in our small coffee room behind the sanctuary,” noted Herman. “We quickly outgrew that space for the sale and moved it to the Richwood Academy for a few years. The church held some events there before our hall was built.”
The hall was finally finished in 2007; after that, the church decided to include the Christmas shop portion of the event. Proceeds will help pay off the mortgage on the hall.
“Everyone is welcome and we appreciate the support of the community,” said Herman. “Come early – some years we sell out.”
