Two Harrison Township police officers were promoted and sworn in during the June 1 Harrison Township Committee meeting.
Cpl. Patrick Morris was promoted to sergeant. His wife and daughter watched as he was sworn in by Mayor Adam Wingate. Officer Christopher Foster is now a corporal who was also sworn in by the mayor with family by his side.
Both promotions came by way of township resolutions unanimously approved by the committee.
After the promotions, the officers and their families had a chance to take pictures and mingle. The committee then reconvened to discuss several ordinances and resolutions.
Among them is a measure that authorizes the execution of a first amendment to the affordable-housing development agreement with Circle Haven, a community enrichment center from Glassboro, and Project Freedom Inc., a barrier-free housing nonprofit. The housing is expected to be built on a vacant plot near the CVS on Mullica Hill Road.
“It’s done by Project Freedom in conjunction with Circle Have,” township Solicitor Brian Duffield explained. “They came to us with a request for additional funding because they went out to bid and their bids were much higher than they budgeted. They asked for another appropriation, which we agreed to. It’s coming out of our affordable-housing trust fund.”
According to Duffield, no taxpayer dollars are involved, and the funds will not come out of the municipal budget. Another ordinance authorizes the payment of $500,000 from the trust fund to pay for the housing development. Both ordinances were unanimously approved by the committee.
The next township committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday at the municipal building.
