Council recently cited the township baseball program and its challenger division for providing local children of all abilities a space to play.

Mayor Stephen Steglik read a proclamation at the council meeting that provided a history of the division – founded by township resident James Shamah – and its purpose.

Mount Laurel Baseball was established in 2000 and has since provided recreational abilities for participants from ages 5 to 18, along with travel and tournament baseball for those 7 to 18 years old. It launched the challenger division in 2019, a free recreational program designed for children with special needs in the township and surrounding areas.

Players with autism, cerebral palsy and ADHD have participated in the spring baseball experience, with its modified rules, soft equipment and emphasis on participation and camaraderie. It pairs every player with a volunteer “buddy,” a middle- or high-school student who guides them through the season as they learn basic baseball skills and team work.

Buddies are trained prior to each season, with the goal of keeping stress low and encouraging success. Every player gets to hit, and when each of them scores a run, there is cheering.

Depending on the number of players registered, the baseball program reserves the right to run the division as a league or a clinic. Players ages 5 through 18 are eligible and they are separated by age and ability once the number of players registered is known.

Since its inception, the challenger division has seen participants return year after year, and player growth is apparent with each new season, according to the proclamation. “This program focuses on creating a fun, inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn fundamentals and build confidence.

“Township council recognizes Mount Laurel Baseball for its commitment to coordinating the challenger division each year for children in the community.”
