The Mount Laurel Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 191 and the Mount Laurel Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 4408 will host their annual 9/11 memorial golf outing at the Golden Pheasant Country Club in Lumberton on Friday, Sept. 11.
“It just so happened that this year, the stars aligned,” said Administrative Sgt. Aaron Harty of the Mount Laurel Township Police Department, also the president of the Mount Laurel FOP Lodge 191. Before he transitioned into his role as administrative sergeant, Harty spent 13 years on patrol and six years in the detective bureau. While each role has different responsibilities, each one has been fulfilling, Harty shared.
With the golf outing falling on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, this year is a special way to keep the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice alive. Harty expressed, “It’s huge for us and we love it, but it’s also good to recognize and keep the memory of 9/11 alive. We like to honor our fallen officers and firemen and keep them and their memories alive within everybody.”
Tickets for this year’s golf outing include greens fees, a cart, lunch, dinner, refreshments, prizes and giveaways. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. Considering that Harty played golf before he started volunteering for the event, when he was approached with the opportunity a few years ago, it was a no-brainer.
The Mount Laurel FOP Lodge 191 and the Mount Laurel Police Foundation work together on community outreach, public safety initiatives and events and sponsor a variety of vital programs and initiatives, including the Mount Laurel Police K-9 program, so the golf outing acts as another way to raise money to give right back to the community. The Mount Laurel FOP Lodge 191 and the Mount Laurel Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 4408 joining forces on the golf outing only added to that success. For Harty, the Mount Laurel FOP Lodge 191 is a fraternal brotherhood with both current members of the police department and retirees coming together at monthly meetings to break bread.
“We’re all together and we all have to watch each other’s backs,” Harty said. “It’s great and that’s why I’ve been president [of the Mount Laurel FOP Lodge 191] for the past 12 years. It’s getting the community to know that we’re here and we’re willing to help as much, wherever is needed.”
Following the golf outing, the Mount Laurel FOP Lodge 191 will host their second annual Rolling With the K-9s Car Show at 560 Walton Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. The free event will include a massive car display, music, food, trophies, raffles and K-9 merchandise. The FOP will also be hosting their K-9 fundraiser at Magnify Brewing Company in Medford on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. That event will support the township police department’s K-9 unit, assisting with training, equipment and ongoing program needs.
