Council has recognized the winners of the fourth annual Deck the House contest and the township’s public works team for its efforts during the Jan. 25 snowstorm.

The contest is open to residents and features five categories: best use of theme, most creative, council’s choice, mayor’s choice and people’s choice.

People’s choice went to the Twinkle Trail at 226 Amberfield Drive, council’s choice to the Holiday House at 744 Amsterdam Road, mayor’s choice to Merriest of Lights at 170 Canterbury Road, most creative to a StarWars Manger Scene at 718 Hunters Lane and best theme to Christmas Classic at 506 Violet Court.

“We’re looking forward to next year’s (contest) already,” said Mayor Stephen Steglik.

Also at the meeting earlier this month, Councilman Curtis Green cited Jerry Mascia, deputy township manager and superintendent of public works, and his staff for their efforts to help a resident the storm.

“I just wanted to make a special shoutout to Jerry (Mascia) and his team,” Green explained. “A (resident) emailed us; it was a 78-year-old man who could not shovel the corner where the crosswalks were. So I called him and said I’ll do the best I can (to help). Then I texted (Mascia) and he (replied) we’ll go out there tomorrow morning.

“(Public works) went out there, shoveled the man’s walkway,” Green added. “(The resident) called me thanking me so much for them to be willing to go out and shovel an individual’s walkway, and to me, that’s what public service is about. So I just want to acknowledge and thank Jerry and his team for doing that. I think that’s why we’re here.”

Steglik also commended township staffers for the hard work they’ve already done this winter.

“We’ve had a brutal, brutal winter,” he noted. “Our township employees have been working around the clock. I cannot thank you enough. Yes, it has taken a massive hit,” Steglik added of the township budget. “But our staff has done an incredible job, so thank you to our police department, EMS, fire department and our hardworking public works employees.”
