A township police officer was celebrated for her community service last month in conjunction with Women’s History Month.

A Lenape High School alum, Laura LeMay joined the department in 2015 and has balanced her police work with years of giving back to the community.

LeMay graduated from the Mercer County Police Academy in 2016. A graduate of Thomas Edison University and member of the Air National Guard, LeMay has been deployed overseas, including trips to Kuwait for Operation Enduring Freedom and missions in support of Odyssey Resolve and Juniper Shield.

LeMay works with several youth programs, including the Police Explorers and the EMS Divas. She also assists with the Junior Police Academy, trunk or treat events and tours of the police department for Girl Scout troops. Showing solidarity and support for her fellow officers in 2020, LeMay rode in the Police Unity Tour, a 300-mile bike ride to honor officers killed in the line of duty.

“I have been with Mount Laurel since 2015,” LeMay said. “I grew up in Mount Laurel and feel a strong desire to give back to the community that helped shape me, while continuing to grow both personally and professionally. I currently serve in the Air National Guard at McGuire Air Force Base, and the experiences I’ve gained in both roles have allowed me to better support the needs of each career.

“I truly value working alongside my colleagues and engaging with the community,” she added. “Every day on the job presents new opportunities to learn, grow and strengthen those connections. While balancing professionalism with personal aspirations can be challenging, it is also incredibly fulfilling.

LeMay also has a message for other women.

“Always keep striving for something greater,” she noted. “Finding a healthy balance between your professional responsibilities and personal goals can help guide you toward your purpose. Life is a blessing, and every moment matters, not only for ourselves but for the people we care about. Keep moving forward and never give up. Believe in yourself, maintain your faith, and prioritize self-care, because you cannot effectively support others if you are running on empty.

“And never underestimate the power of a daily smile or laugh. It can uplift not only your own spirit, but those around you as well.”
