After a successful town-wide yard sale in spring, the township plans a fall version.
Details are yet to be determined, but for the May yard sale, Sustainable Moorestown and Helpsy – an organization whose mission is to keep clothes out of the trash – collected and recycled 2,300 pounds of material.
According to its website, Helpsy collects, sorts and trades second-hand clothes and shoes. Last year, it collected more than 32 million pounds.
“We didn’t know exactly how it was going to go, but it went rather well,” said Chris Salvatico, member of Sustainable Moorestown, of the partnership. “It was a good success and we had a lot of stuff … I think we’re going to try and do it again.
“I think we did some good that day.”
Sustainable Moorestown participated in Moorestown Day in June by promoting recycling, bees, native plants and energy conservation. That same month, its green team hosted a presentation on the Dark Skies Initiative, and that program featured guest speaker and documentary filmmaker Jared Flesher. The initiative is a movement focused on reducing light pollution to preserve natural darkness and its associated benefits for ecosystems, human health and the enjoyment of the night sky.
“It’s just about getting out there and telling people who we are and what we do, because there’s still plenty of people in town that have no idea that we even exist,” Salvatico explained.
Sustainable Moorestown promotes the economic vitality, social equity and environmental quality of the township by acting as an advisory committee. With a mix of projects and outreach initiatives focused on sustainability, the organization develops ways to achieve prosperity while creating a long-term, sustainable environment for generations to come.

Sustainable South Jersey, Sustainable Moorestown and the Strawbridge Lake Beautification Committee are holding a cleanup at Strawbridge Lake Park on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Volunteers will remove litter and clear debris. All participants will meet at the kayak rental stand across from 119 Haines Drive.
