Years ago, the Rotary was thinking of ideas for a new fundraiser when member Coffee came up with the idea for what was originally the Moorestown Rotary Run. After he passed away in 2006, the run was renamed in his honor. Race Director Bill Van Fossen described Coffee as very active in the community and someone who everybody knew in town.

“He was a real good guy …” Van Fossen said. “I think he would be very proud of the (race). I think he would be very proud of what he created.”

The event is presented by the Rotary in cooperation with the township and Community House. It starts and ends there, and the 8K course is measured and certified by the USATF (USA Track & Field). Proceeds benefit Rotary charities and the Scott Coffee Endowment for scholarships.

Since its inception four decades ago, the race has raised more than $1 million, according to Van Fossen. Thousands of people have participated over the years, with families having three generations completing the race. The event also coincides annually with Moorestown Day.

“We’re very fortunate to have a great course, so it runs through some very pretty areas in town,” Van Fossen explained. “There’s a lot of excitement whenever you get any kind of event like this. We get a lot of people that come back year after year because they see that we put on a good event and they enjoy it.”

“We’ve been doing it for so long, that we’ve got a core group that works on the run (and) everybody knows their roles, so we have a good team,” Van Fossen noted. “ … We’re always conscious of wanting to put on a good event … I think we’ve got a good product.”
