What do 300 career victories mean to Shawnee High School Head Football coach Tim Gushue?
“Longevity,” he simply said.
Mayor Mike Czyzyk presented Gushue with a proclamation for his “longevity” at a council meeting on Sept. 22. He has coached Shawnee High School football for 48 years and leads the Renegades in his 44th season as head coach.
“Mr. Gushue exemplifies what it is to serve your community both from an educational standpoint and an athletic standpoint,” Czyzyk said, noting he was one of his players at one point in time.
The coach is “a pillar of the community,” he added.
Gushue has led the Renegades football program since 1983 leading the youth of Medford.
“Coach has led Shawnee Renegades to numerous championships,” Czyzyk said.
Including conference champions in 1993 and 1995, the Burlington County Liberty Champions in 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2005; Olympic Conference American Champions in 2008; Olympic Conference Liberty Division Champions in 2010, 2012, and 2013; West Jersey Football League Patriot Division Championships in 2014 and 2016; and West Jersey Football League American Division Champions in 2025.
Gushue took the Renegades to NJSIAA playoffs in 1992, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
On the evening of Sept. 8, 2026, Coach Gushue led the Shawnee Renegades to a 35-13 victory over the Cherry Hill East High School Cougars.
The win led to the historic 300-win milestone for Gushue, which brings his 44-year record to 300-151-6, according to the proclamation.
“During his years of coaching, he has earned deep declaration of respect of Township Council members, Township officials, fellow coaches, professional colleagues, friends, and family,” Czyzyk said.
Gushue said he was “humbled” by the recognition.
“I’ve been a Medford resident since 1965 when my dad and mom first moved to Medford Township,” he said. “It’s changed a lot but there has been a lot of great moments. I’m blessed to have been able to stay at Shawnee High School.”
Gushue came back to the district in 1977 to teach and has seen many superintendents from K. Kiki Konstantinos when he began to current Superintendent Matthew Webb, who was appointed to the superintendent position after the retirement of Superintendent Carol Birnbohm.
The longtime football coach also founded the boys lacrosse program at Shawnee. He served as head coach from 2003 to 2013 and 2018.
Gushue said he’s been fortunate with the support of the Lenape Regional High School District, Lenape Regional High School Board of Education including longtime member David Stow, his athletes, his coaches and his wife Sally.
“It’s been a dream come true,” he said.
