Heading to the library or town hall? If so, take a look at the lobby’s latest display.
At the start of the month, members of the Pinelands Garden Club of Medford gave an All-American makeover to the display case in the lobby of town hall. It is now decked in red, white, and blue in honor of America’s 250th birthday.
Variations of the American flag (including a 13 folded one), quilts, a Star-Spangled top hat, confetti, and small trinkets make up most of the three-tiered display case. At the top, a copy of the Preamble is framed, in addition to some inspirational quotes, an informational sheet about the length of the nation’s major wars, and a July history and trivia sheet.
There also is a curated selection of books from the Pinelands Library, featuring picks about the American Revolution.
The center shelf highlights one of the other main themes of July – the Shore. A miniature beach scene is set-up, along with a collection of seashells. Library books tied to lighthouses or birds of the Shore complete the shelf.
The members of the Pinelands Garden Club swap out the displays seasonally. This season, the case compliments the paintings from Military Artist Community-Veterans Art Class (MAC-VAC) on display throughout the lobby.
MAC-VAC is one of Medford Arts Center’s free art programs, where veterans of all art skill-levels can explore creative outlets while building community. The veterans exhibit celebrates the semiquincentennial, and each painting features American themes or iconic symbols. The exhibit was unveiled in May and will remain up in the town hall lobby until December 31.
The Pinelands Garden Club of Medford is part of National Garden Clubs, Inc, a country-wide non-profit organization that has been active since 1929. It has more than 5,000 clubs across the nation. The clubs make efforts across their towns to enhance natural resources and environments, as well as support educational and community service initiatives. The Pinelands/Medford branch has been active since 1971.
The club meets at Medford United Methodist Church the second Monday of the month, and new members are always welcome.
