Female members of Evesham Township Council – Councilwoman Heather Cooper (left to right), Mayor Jackie Veasy and Deputy Mayor Dr. Krystal Hunter – were on hand, appropriately enough, as the Women’s History Month proclamation was presented.

Evesham council proclaimed Women’s History Month at its regular meeting on March 12 and also heard from a male member who praised the contributions of his female colleagues.

“(This) proclamation, which I’m very proud to stand in front of you, next to Deputy Mayor (Dr. Krystal Hunter) and Councilwoman (Heather) Cooper, is for Women’s History Month,” Mayor Jackie Veasy said. “I’m very honored to serve on this council with three women and supported by (Councilmen Christian Smith and Joseph Fisicaro Jr.). But Women’s History Month is so special here in Evesham.

“We do many things to support our women in our community and we’re just glad to celebrate women’s history.”

Veasy read the proclamation, which commended lesser-known women in history who have made extraordinary and significant contributions to society without much recognition.

“Today, some may take for granted the basic rights of our nations women’s right to vote, own property, control their own finances, sign legal documents, enter the profession of their choosing, marry whom they choose or have a legal identity separate from a husband,” Veasy explained.

“These rights would not have been obtained if not for the perseverance, endurance and accomplishments of the many women throughout our nation’s history who fought for quality and justice.”

“While we often look to the well-known names in history of women in the past,” the proclamation noted, “we must also remember the women who deserve equal recognition for their countless recorded and unrecorded historic contributions to the growth and strength of our great nation.

“Women’s History Month is celebrated annually each March to recognize the many women who have ensured women’s rights and freedoms, and those who have also contributed to our nations culture, arts, sciences, economy and more.

“We must continue to keep a watchful eye on the future to ensure said women’s rights are protected and that equality for all is further enshrined in law.”

During remarks at the meeting, Fisicaro commended women working for the township, noting their advice continues to help him improve in his role on council.

“There are many empowering in these offices who are making me a better councilman every single day,” he added. “I appreciate all of you. I really hope that I can transfer the good you’ve given me out to the community.”

The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9.
