The township school board named nine students its Stars of Character for the month of November at a meeting on Dec. 8 attended by dozens of people at Centre City Elementary School.
Each month during the school year, the Mantua school district names students who best demonstrate a specific character trait, two from preschool, one from Sewell Elementary School, one from the Evergreen program at J. Mason Tomlin Elementary and one student each from kindergarten to the sixth grade.
Superintendent Christine Trampe commented on the November character trait.
“This month we’re celebrating humility,” she said at the board meeting, “which means not bragging and remembering that everyone has something special to offer. A humble person does their best and celebrates others and is willing to learn from mistakes.
“We treat people with kindness and respect, and we make a place where everyone feels important.”
The winners of the month are Evergreen preschooler Ryan Sullivan, Sewell Elementary pre-schooler Isabel O’Malley, kindergartener Logan Seedorf, first-grader Hannah Kauffman, second-grader Leandra Sammons, third-grader Madilyn Rana, fourth-grader Anthony Mignogna, fifth-grader Eliana Lozano and sixth-grader Sophia Cayer-Johnson.
Another star student from last month, kindergartener Barrett Eisenbrey, was honored after being absent from a prior board meeting that honored students who best showed respect.
The Stars of Character were chosen by their teachers, from whom Trampe read statements at the meeting.
“This award recognizes students who demonstrate modesty, selflessness and genuine commitment to the school community,” read a statement about Cayer-Johnson. “Sofia consistently puts the needs of others before her own and leads by example through her quiet kindness.”
Each winning student received a certificate, bracelet and necklace recognizing their accomplishment. There were two second-time winners at the meeting who got a medallion, a pencil and a new certificate for the second award.
The next Mantua board of education meeting will be a reorganization session at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Centre City Elementary.
