The Mantua Township Historical Society hosted a sign and monument unveiling ceremony on May 31 for the Union Graveyard that sits beside the Norris Street School and the society.
The Union Graveyard and United Association was founded in 1804 to tend to the 220-year-old burial site, among the first public graveyards in the area. At about a third of an acre, it is said to have as many as 450 township residents – including 11 known veterans – buried there.
To date, 125 grave markers are accounted for. The last known burial at the Union Graveyard is believed to have been over 100 years ago.
“We are truly grateful for the dedication of our incredible historical commission led by Chairman Jeff Gellenthin and Vice Chairman Herb Hood,” said Committeeman Jason Snyder at the unveiling.
