The township’s Public Works Department is providing monthly convenience center dropoffs at its garage where residents can dispose of household trash.

The dropoffs will take place on the fourth Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the next one is scheduled for Feb. 28.

The collections are for Mantua residents only and proof of residency will be required on arrival. Items that can be disposed of include yard waste like grass clippings, leaves and brush; metal items such as refrigerators, grills and electronics; and used motor oil.

Larger items that are normally designated for bulk collection week – such as rolled-up carpets, bagged items, sofas, beds and other furniture – will also be accepted.

“It is another opportunity for residents to get rid of their bulk trash,” said Public Works Superintendent Glenn Demers. “It’s supposed to make up for when residents don’t have anything for bulk pickup week.”

Items that can’t be collected include construction materials; bricks; concrete; wood clippings; and any hazardous materials, namely anything considered flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic or reactive under certain circumstances. They are usually marked with a warning sign.

“We have someone monitoring the whole situation,” Demers said. “He’ll check IDs and make sure the right stuff gets thrown out. He oversees everything that takes place.”

Gloucester County hosts special waste collections throughout the year for hazardous waste. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at the county’s roads department building in Clayton, 1200 Noeth Delsea Drive (Route 47) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
