Mantua VFW Post 7679 held its annual 5K Running for Vets on Oct. 5. Proceeds benefit the Honor Flight of Southern New Jersey and the Mantua VFW.

Committeewoman Eileen Lukens was the official “starter” of the event that began at the township’s administration building, near the Veterans Plaza, and traveled through Chestnut Branch Park.

County commissioner and Veterans Affairs liaison Tom Bianco was on hand to support the VFW and helped kick off the race. Deputy Mayor John Legge and Committeeman Jay Snyder both participated in the run/walk and represented the township committee.

“It was an immense honor to start the race in the mayor’s absence this year,” said Lukens. “We’d like to thank our VFW post commander, Charles Thorp, and VFW event organizer, Joe Heitman, for all the great work that’s constantly done for the veterans in our community and beyond.

“This is just one example of the VFW’s hard work and their unwavering commitment to our incredible community. We are truly grateful for their exemplary leadership.”
