The township committee recognized its new police chief and a Clearview High basketball player who notched 1,000 career points at its April 13 meeting.

Former captain Bill Murphy – who has more than 20 years of law-enforcement experience – is the new chief. He began his career with the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department, where he provided security for the state Supreme Court. He joined the Mantua department in 2006 and made his way up the ranks.

Murphy has been overseeing police operations since former chief Darren White retired in March.

“Chief Murphy has consistently demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to our community,” Mayor Robert Zimmerman said. “He has overseen the day-to-day operations of the department, served as a field training officer, internal affairs supervisor, Deputy OEM (Office of Emergency Management) coordinator, school safety officer and firearms instructor.”

Murphy spoke to guests at the meeting, including his family and fellow officers, after he was sworn in. Wenonah Mayor Jessica Doheny – her department and Mantua’s share operations – was also in attendance.

“I would like to thank the entire Mantua Township Committee and the committee from Wenonah for this profound honor of trusting me as its chief of police of Mantua Township,” Murphy noted. “Thank you for your confidence and your support. It means a great deal to me.

“To my wife, my daughters, my mom, my brother, my sister and all my extended family – including my in-laws – and all my friends here tonight, your love, strength, support and sacrifices have carried me every step of the way, and I couldn’t do this without you.”

Clearview senior and basketball player Juliette Mirigliani was honored with a proclamation for scoring more than 1,000 career points in her four years at the school. She reached her record in January and is the fourth female basketball player in school history – and the 14th overall – to do so.

Mirigliani’s other accomplishments include scoring more than 100 career three-pointers. She joined the varsity team as a freshman and was named its MVP in her junior year. She will continue her basketball career at Montclair State University in the fall.

“She has really flourished with these accomplishments and put her own self on the map in Mantua,” Zimmerman observed. “I’m extremely proud of you, the committee is proud of you and I want to thank you for coming in.”
