The winners and honorable mentions in the contest meet with Haddon Fortnightly leaders to accept their award certificates.
The Haddon Fortnightly held its second annual Greeting Card Cover Design contest to coincide with the holidays and presented awards at its civic and social club on Oct. 23.
The contest was open to middle- and elementary-school students in the borough, Haddon Township and Westmont. This year’s theme was the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Entries were categorized based on grade level, with four categories: kindergarten through second grade, third grade, fourth and fifth grade and middle school.
First-grader Luke Chaiken of Thomas Edison Elementary School in Westmont won for his category. His card featured the phrase “Happy 250th Birthday America,” with a large American flag across the cover and an army helmet placed atop a flag’s pole. He came to the award ceremony dressed as George Washington.
Sean Bartholomew of Clyde S. Jennings Elementary in Haddon Township won the third-grade prize for his design of an American flag background and the declaration in the center. It was bordered by the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell, with other flags on each side and an outline of the nation at the top of the card.
Haddon Township fourth-grader Jovina Arthur Pandiyaraj from Van Sciver Elementary won in the fourth- and fifth-grade category for his cover design of a hand signing a cartoon, and the declaration shown with three children waving flags below.
Bryana Cruz, a seventh-grader at William G. Rohrer Middle School, won for the middle-school category. Her card’s cover had an American flag background with a quill and inkwell and the phrase, “The 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.”
“We were very pleasantly surprised with the level of enthusiasm and creativity from the kids,” said Susan Foley, the club’s arts and culture chair.
Winners got certificates of achievement and gift cards to the Haddonfield dessert spot Gelato Dolceria. Honorable mentions from each category were also awarded.
Two of last year’s winning designs were printed on blank cards and sold by the borough library and at various farmer’s markets to benefit of the Fortnightly. The plan is the same for this year.
