Haddonfield plans to install new four-way stop signs at the intersection of West End and Euclid avenues next month.
There is now only a single stop sign along West Euclid at the intersection. The new signs along West End will be solar powered and light up when they detect approaching cars.
Joana McDonnell, the borough’s communications officer, said she expects the signs to be up in early July, but there is not yet a specific date because they’re back ordered. Police Chief Jason Cutler had predicted it would take four to six weeks to order the signs after notice to the county.
Meanwhile, McDonnell wants the added stop to address sight lines at the site.
“It is just an intersection that we said has always been challenging because of the sight lines,” she explained. “So the hope is having the stop sign on West End there on either side, the hope is, once people get used to it, is that it will be easier for people.”
According to a borough Facebook post, because of those “challenging sight lines,” a four-way stop will “improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”
An ordinance to approve the new signs was passed at the borough commissioners meeting on Feb. 23 and approved by the Camden County Commissioners at its June 18 session. To get approval, the borough had to submit a traffic study to the county that measured the impact of a four-way stop.
County engineer Jim Winckowski said the submissions provide a proper process for approval.
“It’s just so it’s not just freelance, people just throwing up speed limits and stop signs where ever they want,” he noted. “Give it proper control … We want to make sure it’s the right thing to do and it’s an awkward intersection with it being offset like that …
“We just want to make sure all parties are in agreement with it and the study does take some time, so there’s a cost to it.”
Winckowski believes this is the first attempt to get a four-way stop sign at the intersection. Commissioner Frank Troy – who voted in favor of the project – said that two of the four people who live at the intersection were happy about the ordinance.
There have been several accidents at the intersection, but a specific number has not been revealed. In a 2024 Facebook post, Cutler included accident data for the surrounding streets, including one block away at Redman and West End avenues, where five accidents were reported from 2021 to 2024.
Two blocks away at Mount Vernon and West End avenues, there were three accidents in the same time period, he added.
