BY JOE GORMAN
Longtime Educator
The most generous teacher I ever worked with was Diane Lusk. No child did without if Diane had anything to say about it.
She took a group of Gloucester City students to Russia to help them understand the corrupt Soviet economy. Russia is a long way from Market Street but Ms. Lusk never hesitated. She refused to take “no” for an answer. And she never sought the spotlight or looked for any credit.
Ms. Lusk would take kids to a medical doctor and a couple of times she paid for their medical operation if they did not have insurance – operations that were not covered by insurance. And many Gloucester youngsters had no medical insurance.
She paid for students’ class trips. She got them on television shows. It was impossible to intimidate her. She wouldn’t let you. Diane was exceedingly generous.
She loved laughing with the Gloucester kids. She was afraid of no one on either side of the law. She had moxie.
An extraordinary fact is that Diane Lusk and the late Jeff Thomas (the wonderful junior high English teacher who recently passed away) were classmates and friends at Triton High School – two Bellmawr kids who grew up and improved the lives of countless kids in Gloucester City. We were and are blessed.
