There was a festive aura in City Council chambers on March 23, as Mayor Dayl Baile presented awards to winners of the Gloucester City Fire Department Fire Prevention poster winners to begin the meeting.

More than 30 family members and friends applauded loudly after the presentation to Gloucester City Middle School students Savannah Bil, Harper Saunders, Mallory Frederick and A’Meir Singleton, who were joined by GMS Principal Shane McNichol and Director of Fire Services Thomas Quinn.

Other winners in the contest, who all got to march in the Gloucester City St. Patrick’s Parade, were Kaylah Cooper, Ariana De Grilla, Sabrina Ton, Andy Williams, Wendy Moreno Beltre, Emma O’Connor, Brooklyn DePoder, Jayani Carter, Lucy Moore and Nayeli Zelaya.

Getting down to business, City Council members then approved a series of resolutions, including one to implement the New Cash Payment Rounding Policy for Pennies since they are no longer being made by the U.S. Mint.

Many businesses and states are adopting a symmetrical, voluntary rounding policy for cash transactions to the nearest five cents. Cash totals ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents are rounded down, while 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents are rounded up.

In other business, City Council suspended the rental license of one landlord and put the licenses of nine other landlords on probation for six months for not keeping up their properties.

The license issued to Brian Major for 314 Monmouth St., Unit 2, was suspended. The ones put on probation included:

CSA III LLC for 415 Hudson St.; CSA III LLC for 706 Cherry St.; CSA III LLC for 430 Hunter St.; Michael Gilboy and Theresa Pierce for 209 Somerset St.; PGRR LLC for 522 Monmouth St.; MKLK LLC for 211 Market St.; RUEHLE PMI LLC for 216 Somerset St.; RUEHLE PMI LLC for 234 S. Broadway; and SYMPHONY HOLDING LLC for 108 S. Sussex St.

As for upcoming activities, Council invited all Gloucester City youngsters to participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt this Thursday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m. sharp on the Softball Field in the Johnson Boulevard Sports Complex.

Also, Mayor Baile announced that the citywide Clean-Up Day will be Saturday, April 11. The next City Council regular meeting will be on Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 313 Monmouth St.
