The New Jersey Center for the Book (NJCB), an affiliate of the Library of Congress, has chosen the Nick Virgilio Writers House in Camden as the 2025 recipient of its Literary Landmark Award.

Literary Landmarks are New Jersey places or monuments that represent the state’s literary, scientific, or artistic heritage and legacy. Selection of the Writers House recognizes the organization’s commitment to promoting literacy, creativity and self-expression.

The site also hosts the Nick Virgilio Haiku Association, founded in 1989 to promote the writing of haiku poetry and encourage young people to write poetry that furthers the work of Virgilio, a world-renowned haiku poet.

A ceremony marking the award will be held at the Writers House, 1801 Broadway, on June 1. Previous recipients of the Literary Landmark Award include the Newark library; the Walt Whitman House, also in Camden; and the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies.

NJCB celebrates and promotes reading, books, libraries and literacy in all its many forms throughout the state. It was established in 2001, becoming the 44th state to create a designated center in affiliation with the Library of Congress, the country’s oldest federal cultural institution. It also was the first center located in a university, at Rutgers School of Communication and Information.
