Music sparks a memory

First Methodist Church (FMC) in Moorestown is launching a music program for those with early onset dementia or Alzheimer’s and their caregivers on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

Donna Banes, FMC’s director of traditional worship, came across a news clip on social media more than a year ago of a church group in Virginia that does the same thing. She thought it was a neat idea, so she played the clip back, found the name of the church and connected with the lead of that program. Banes’ great-grandmother, grandmother and uncle have all battled onset dementia or Alzheimer’s, so the program is personal to her, but it’s something she wanted to bring to the community.

“This is a way to create a community of connection with others that have similar issues,” Banes said. “You strive to just have a connection where you don’t feel like you’re so alone in this because it’s tough. The further they decline and get to where they don’t recognize you, it’s hard. It’s important because of my family history with it but when I saw this clip it just really sparked something.”

Memory Music Makers will be held through June on the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease that affects memory, thinking and behavior, while dementia is an umbrella term for symptoms that interfere with daily life. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. Health and long-term care costs for people living with dementia are projected to reach $409 billion in 2026 and nearly $1 trillion in 2050. Memory Music Makers is a place where participants and caregivers can come together to sing familiar hymns, favorite oldies and well-loved songs in a relaxed environment. “Something like this is unique,” Banes said. “You can come and sing whether you can or can’t carry a tune in the bucket… We just want people to feel like this is fun. If you can bring people some joy in their day, what more can you ask?”
