Get ready to be fit.
Monroe Township, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and the National Fitness Campaign invite the public to celebrate the opening of a new Fitness Court at Owens Park on Nov. 24.
Guests at the park can arrive at 12:30 p.m. to learn about healthier lifestyles and fighting preventable diseases caused by sedentary habits.
“We’re changing the way America thinks about options – from municipal parks and trails – to college campuses – to high schools nationwide – and we’re bringing free fitness everywhere,” said National Fitness Campaign founder Mitch Menaged in a story on the fitness campaign’s website.
The campaign was founded in 1979 when the first court opened. Courts have now been redesigned for the 21st century with a seven-movement and seven-minute fitness system.
“It allows you to use your own bodyweight to get the perfect workout,” Menaged explained.
Greg Jordan, director of the University of Recreation and Well-Being at Oakland University in Michigan, said anyone can use the program.
“No matter what your age is, no matter what your physical fitness level is, no matter what your skills are, it is very adaptable,” he noted.
Thousands of certified ambassadors will be trained and conduct classes, challenges and clinics as part of the National Fitness Campaign’s efforts to bring more students outside. Guests can scan the fitness court’s digital wall with a smart phone to access a library of free workouts designed to optimize the court experience.
This year, the campaign is introducing a fitness court studio to create the “ultimate community wellness hub, uniting the power of yoga, Zumba, body weight, fitness and the arts.”
“Fitness public art continues to grow and inspire across the country,” Menaged observed. “As local artists begin to collaborate beautiful one-of-a-kind murals to bring life on fitness courts and fitness court studios, we are proud to help cities of all sizes raise millions of dollars from respective sponsors to support free fitness.
“Wherever fitness is a priority, you can find a fitness court.”
All are welcome at the campaign’s newest site in Monroe. No RSVP is necessary. The township joins neighboring Willingboro Township, Little Egg Harbor Township and Egg Harbor City, which already have fitness courts.
