Deptford council hosted a promotion ceremony for two police officers at its meeting on Aug. 4, as family and fellow officers looked on.
Michael Riggs was promoted to lieutenant and Michael Tirado to sergeant. Both men also signed documentation to make their new positions official and were administered the oath by Mayor Paul Medany.
“On behalf of the Deptford Township council,” Medany said before the swearing-ins, “we would like to thank and honor the sacrifices and service of all our police officers in Deptford Township for the fantastic job they do every day protecting the township.
“Thank you all for everything we do,” he added. “These are great nights …”
Police Chief Joseph Smith was also on hand and took the time to praise the work of the newly promoted officers and the township police, and thank council for its support.
“First of all,” he noted, “I would like to thank Sgt. Tirado and Lt. Riggs for all their support and dedication over the years. I would also like to congratulate them on their promotions. I’d like to thank their families and friends for coming here tonight, all the officers that came out tonight to support them, as well as the mayor and council for their continued support. Thank you everyone very much.”
A brief intermission was taken to allow everyone to take pictures and leave the meeting if they wish. Even after the meeting continued, the officers, their colleagues and family still hung around and talked with each other.
