Adults of all ages can use the library’s supply of coloring tools to color to their heart’s content.

“This is open to anyone who wants to come and relax,” said librarian Michelle Burns. “Coloring has been shown to lower stress and anxiety, as well as keep fine motor skills homed in adults.”

A 2015 study conducted by Michigan State University found the repetitive motions of coloring can help people maintain focus and relax by tapping into the creative and tactical sides of the brain. The creative part is used in deciding which colors are used and where they’re placed; the tactical side is used to apply color based on the illustrator’s original intention.

A 2018 study done by the “Journal of Social Sciences” had similar findings.

“I try to find timely designs to put out each week,” Burns explained of the coloring sessions. “For instance, we had lots of sweethearts and snowmen for our last event. There are complex designs such as intricate mandalas, as well as simpler art, so there are always fun choices.”

With spring and Easter approaching, the sessions could see designs based on themes associated with flowers and Easter eggs, among others. Along with providing supplies, the library also offers the designs. Guests at the free sessions bring their own stencils, share their creations with others and chat amongst themselves.

Participants don’t need a library card and snacks will be provided along with music for a soothing environment.

“It is just a great opportunity to interact and relax,” said Burns.
