The Lakebridge 55-and-over community is the setting for an event the township hopes will build community spirit among residents.

The township’s Lakebridge neighborhood barbecue will return this year from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28.

The free event is not limited to those in the 55-and-over Lakebridge neighborhood but open to all Deptford residents. Traditional barbecue food will be served, along with ice cream from a Mister Softee truck.

“The event is meant to build community spirit,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “It’s meant to bring the community together to talk with people they might not have met otherwise.”

Medany, members of council and the township administration are expected to attend the barbecue. One of its goals, according to the mayor, is for guests to talk informally with their elected officials.

“It’s important for the community as a whole,” he noted. “We realize a lot of folks can’t make it to council meetings to meet us.”

The event is being organized by its sponsor, the township parks and recreation department. A crowd of about 150 people is expected.

The barbecue is the second of three scheduled for the late spring and early summer. One took place on May 31 in Blackwood Terrace; a third is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, in Locust Grove. Summer barbecues for seniors will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, in the Heritage neighborhood, and during the same times on Thursday, Aug. 14, in the Bridlewood Estates.

“We have so many neighborhoods and around 32,000 people living in Deptford,” Medany noted of the schedule. “We want to make sure that each one has a chance to host one at some point.”
