The Deptford library kicked off its upcoming events season with a summer reading kickoff party on May 17.

The kickoff drew hundreds, according to librarian Michelle Burns, and the facility saw 83 new applications for free library cards.

“We wanted to have a nice event for the community to get everyone excited about summer and to alert everyone to the fun things happening at the library this summer,” said Burns. “At the event, we had a Mr. Softee truck, a video game truck, hot dogs and other snacks, balloon animals and a raffle for a $100 Visa gift card.”

Among summer events planned at the library are a Taylor Swift-themed party at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 30; young adult game-day events for kids in grades eight through 11 at 3 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning July 10; and teen craft club meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 3 p.m.

The kickoff party took place inside and outside the facility – which recently underwent renovations – as well as across the street at Library Park. Among those in attendance were Mayor Paul Medany, members of the Deptford council, the parks and recreation and public works departments and police. The township was a sponsor.

“There were so many families playing and eating and having a great time,” Burns reported. “We gave out magnets listing all the fun events for the summer, as well as brochures about our Discovery Museum program, and a bunch of library merch, too.

“It was a beautiful day and hopefully everyone will keep coming back to the library.”
