Members of the fire department and fire cadets (in bright shirts) were honored for their performance at the state’s annual fire convention.
Deptford council officially recognized presidents of sports clubs and the fire department for their work in the community during its Oct. 6 meeting, one that had dozens of people looking on.
Club presidents who were all named citizens of the month for October are Kyle Mobley of Deptford basketball, Mike Carducci, softball, Mike Bonanno, soccer, Don Bozzuffi, Little League, Shawn McLaughlin, football and cheerleading, Robert Scavelli, wrestling, and James Noce, Oak Valley Athletic Association.
Also included as citizens of the month were the heads of the township Scout troops in Deptford: Sharon Galda of Cub Scout Pack 62, Vicki Fulgham of Girl Scouts, Mike Wintling of Boy Scout Troop 62, Christina Mays of Girl Scouts and Dan Furey of Cub Scout Pack 62. Each award recipient received a certificate from council.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “But Deptford Township is special. We have so many volunteers who are so dedicated. We have volunteers in organizations that have been here for 40, 50 and almost 60 years in one organization.”
The fire department was honored twice. Council presented it with a proclamation recognizing Oct. 5 to 11 as Fire Prevention Week, then named it business of the month. The department was also cited for its performance at the New Jersey Fireman’s Convention in Wildwood on Sept. 13, when it took first place in 17 of 18 categories.
Fire cadets at the meeting displayed a trophy they won at the event.
“The fire district would want to thank all the agencies that help us keep moving forward,” noted Fire Commissioner Chairman Michael White. “Volunteerism is getting difficult and harder. But there is a job for everybody. Everybody, no matter how small or big the task is, we always find a position, always find an assignment that somebody can help us with.
“I appreciate everything everybody does for the township.”
Council also cited volunteers who strive to be successful.
“Today we honor all of you,” said Medany. “The work that you do as a group, thank you so much.”
