An army’s little-told stories

Historical reenactors Noah Lewis (left) and Joe Becton will each portray an African American who served in the Continental Army during Woodbury Juneteenth’s Feb. 23 event, Black Continental Army Soldiers: A Little Told Story.

Woodbury Juneteenth is presenting a Black History Month program celebrating African Americans who served in Continental Army during the Revolutionary War on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. in the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

The free program features historical reenactors Noah Lewis and Joe Becton portraying a broad range of experiences of the free and enslaved men who fought against the British.

Lewis will portray Ned Hector, who served in the Continental Army’s artillery unit as a bombardier who drove wagons of ammunition and supplies. Becton will portray the life and times of Jack Sisson, an enslaved African American who gained his freedom by enlisting in the Continental Army.

The church and the Gloucester County Historical Society are collaborating on the event, sponsored by the city of Woodbury, the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the New Jersey Historical Commission.

Bethlehem Baptist Church is at 414 Mantua Pike in Woodbury.
