The Deptford board of education announced a number of developments regarding the activities of high-school seniors and the results of a family forum at its meeting on April 15.

The activities presentation was given by two students from Deptford High’s Class of 2025, the corresponding secretary for the class, 18-year-old Rachel Rush, and the recording secretary, 18-year-old Natalie Averion. Their presentation focused on accomplishments and events students participated in throughout the school year.

“We have been engaged in numerous ideas of involvement, such as our senior sunrise in the beginning of the school year, homecoming, pep rallies and our senior trip,” Rush noted. “Our class’ academics are also something we pride ourselves on, as our class has the highest number of honor roll and principal’s list students.”

“In order to develop relationships,” Averion offered, “it is critical that our class assists students. Our class has been motivated to maintain relationships within the Deptford family. We aim to reassure children that they are not alone in order to maintain a sense of community within our school.”

The two seniors received praise from the school board, who thanked them for their work in making the school district a better place.

“We appreciate you coming to our meeting and giving us an update,” said board President Joe McKenna. “Thank you for all you do for your Spartan students.”

The board then updated the recet forum, which took place on March 31 and was presented by Superintendent Kevin Kanauss. The forums are held in order for the board to listen to issues parents might have about the district. Each session focuses on a specific topic; the previous forum focused on transportation procedures, bus stops and pickups.

“We had about 60 families, individuals in attendance,” Kanauss explained. “Our transportation committee of the board was there, too, in support and to answer questions to families. It appeared like the forum was very good. It was very well attended.

“The conversations were great,” he added. “The parents got to voice concerns, coming out of this year and going into next year. Things that that we were aware of, things we weren’t aware of, things we could look into immediately, things we’re looking into over the course of the next couple of months in preparation for next school year.

“But, again, the family forums are a great opportunity for families to come out, parents to come out and share concerns, successes and have an open discussion with the administration.”

While an exact date for the next forum has yet to be determined, it was expected to take place sometime after spring break, which began on April 18 and ends on Friday. The next topic will focus on cell phone use and storage for students.

The next board of education meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6.
