The Burlington County Animal Shelter is seeking residents to put on a cape and help rescue some of the available dogs and cats during a special super-themed open house next weekend.

This year’s Clear the Shelter Open House will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, from noon to 4 p.m. at the shelter on 35 Academy Drive, Westampton. During the event, visitors will be able to meet and interact with adoptable dogs and cats and learn more about them from the shelter’s staff and volunteers.

To help inspire visitors, the new Superman movie featuring Krypto the superpowered dog will be shown on the shelter screens, and all adoption fees will be waived for animals a year or older.

There will also be Kona Ice available for visitors, hero-themed games and activities for children, and information on responsible pet ownership.

“You don’t need to be Superman or Wonder Woman to become a hero to the many dogs and cats at the shelter,” said Burlington County Commissioner Tyler Burrell, the liaison to the animal shelter. “You just need to open your heart and help them find a loving home and family. Those who do adopt will be rewarded with a loyal and loving companion.

The open house is organized by Burlington County in partnership with Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter to raise awareness about the shelter’s mission and to connect adoptable pets with new loving families.

Among the animals that visitors will get to meet is Hambone, a 5-year-old English Bulldog mix who was brought to the shelter in January as a stray. Shelter staff say he’s a big people pleaser who loves to soak up attention.

The shelter’s available cats include Talus, a 5-year-old who came to the shelter with 20 other cat relatives from the same home. Staff say he’s both playful and curious.

Residents can learn more about Hambone, Talus and dozens more available pets at the open house or online at https://www.co.burlington.nj.us/1446/Available-for-Adoption.

Fosters are also needed and fostering is a great option for individuals or families who aren’t sure they are ready to adopt. Learn more about the shelter’s foster program and other volunteer opportunities at the open house.

Animal lovers can also volunteer time to help with shelter tasks, make financial donations or gift to shelter needed supplies. For more information, including a wish list of items, visit https://www.co.burlington.nj.us/1290/Donation-Wish-List.

“Thanks to the shelter staff, volunteers and many big-hearted families, more than 790 dogs and cats have been adopted from the shelter so far this year, and another 174 have been placed with rescue groups,” said Burlington County Commissioner Randy Brolo. “Every adoption is a victory, and we are committed to doing everything possible to help them all find forever homes.”
