West High graduated 333 students in the class of 2026 on June 18.

The commencement started with a prerecorded message from township Mayor David Fleisher, also an East graduate, about his pride in the class.

“So graduation day in our community is always special for us,” he said. “I know that every student’s and every family’s journey has been and will be different. I want you to know, that whatever comes next for you – college, the workforce or military or public service – we are proud of you.”

Principal John Burns asked West teachers to stand and be recognized for their work with the graduates.

“They are the professional staff who traditionally spend their lives in the field of education helping young people prepare for their future,” he noted. “I wish to recognize their efforts and express deep gratitude for what they have done to bring our graduates to this day.”

Several teachers are retiring, among them Karen Howard; William Segrest; and Karen Lignana, who had the honor of reading the names of the graduates.

Salma Mitwalli, who gave the class address to roaring applause, suggested audience members take a picture of themselves so they have something to remember.

“Capture your smile on your face,” Mitwalli urged. “Remember you will always have this moment, what you did in 2026, to look back on. Even if all your pictures get wiped, never forget the memories you made with the people you love the most … if you take away anything from this speech, let it be this photo that you took.”

Valedictorian Nayla Adballah referenced the importance of looking in all directions.

“Looking forwards reminds us that life keeps moving,” Adballah observed. “When we look ahead, we’re thinking of everything that comes ahead … It’s crucial that we also occasionally look backwards. We’re all from unique circumstances, and we must acknowledge where we come from and the sacrifices those of us take so we can arrive.”
