The Camden County Board of Commissioners hosted a homeless services and resource fair in Berlin on Oct. 23 that attracted dozens of needy individuals and offered a wide range of essential services and resources.

Held at Holy Communion Lutheran Church in the borough, the fair offered homeless individuals not just access to support, but free breakfast and lunch, on-site showers and haircuts.

“This fair breaks down barriers to access, delivering necessary care to those in need,” said county Commissioner Virginia Betteridge. “Combating homelessness is a top priority for the board of commissioners, and these resource fairs are a critical component in achieving that goal.”

The event featured an array of local providers who assist the homeless, including the Camden County Board of Social Services, the county Office of Mental Health and Addiction, Volunteers of America, the Sanctuary Foundation for Veterans and Catholic Charities.

Some of the homeless attendees sought out not only the fair’s amenities, but information about housing and employment opportunities and guidance on navigating long-term solutions.

“I came here looking for a meal and a place to get cleaned up,” said one attendee, a 34-year-old who wished to remain anonymous and has been homeless for several months. “I found so much more. The people here really care, and they’ve given me hope that I can get back on my feet.”

The fair was more than just a one-day event: It was also meant to foster ongoing connections between individuals in need and service providers. Representatives from the organizations on hand spent time with attendees to discuss tailoring resources to their needs. The homeless participants in turn expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn about regaining stability.

The fair’s location at Holy Communion Lutheran Church was intentional. The church has long been an advocate for vulnerable populations and has previously hosted similar events. The commissioners also emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing the homeless crisis.

“This event was not just about providing immediate services; it was about showing that we care and that our community stands with those who are struggling,” offered Betteridge. “We need to keep these conversations going and continue to find ways to support one another.”

Local residents were encouraged to share information about the fair with anyone who might benefit. Word of the fair spread quickly, organizers said, and they were pleased with the turnout.
