After months of service in Syria, a National Guard member made it home to Voorhees for the holiday.
First Lt. Jon Christian Dewland said his deployment marked a significant chapter in his life and career. The Eastern High School graduate and Lockheed Martin employee joined the guard to take advantage of its college benefits, but he’s always been driven by a sense of duty to the county.
Dewland also described his deployment as an opportunity for personal growth.
“The military has helped me gain experience in discovering myself,” he explained, “and navigating the variety of challenges in working with and leading others.”
Dewland served in the guard’s Base Defense Operations Center in Syria as a battle captain. His responsibilities included monitoring the skies – including delivering early warnings of aerial threats – and safeguarding the base as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.
“It was challenging but rewarding to work in such a critical capacity,” he recalled.
Dewland’s father, Mark, who runs a Berlin law firm, addressed his son in a message, citing his achievements and sacrifices.
“Your family, your friends, and your country salute you for your commitment to Operation Inherent Resolve,” Mark noted.
For Jon Dewland, the deployment produced memorable experiences.
“I enjoyed spending time with people from different walks of life, hearing their perspectives on events in the region and witnessing those around me develop and grow throughout the deployment,” he shared.
For the entire Dewland family, their son’s return is a time for celebration, but also relief. Jon’s deployment produced mixed emotions in his family, of pride, but also concern.
“I’m incredibly proud of his dedication and the sacrifices he’s made,” said Mark Dewland. “It’s never easy to see a loved one go through such challenges, but it’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of our service members.”
For his son, coming home means good rest and recuperation and time for family. As Dewland transitions back to civilian life, he has plans to make the most of his time home.
“I’m looking forward to snowboarding, taking a few vacations, and then getting back to work at Lockheed Martin,” he said.
