Participants of South Jersey’s Best Summer Camp got a visit from the Berlin fire company on July 11 as part of their themed superhero week.
Campers celebrated real-life heroes in the community as the theme for the week of July 7, from first responders to military personnel, and gave children ages 5 to 12 a hands-on look at what it means to be brave, compassionate and community-minded. Kids were treated to a fire-safety demonstration, tried on firefighter gear and asked questions.
“Superhero Week was inspired by our belief that real heroes walk among us, our everyday community helpers,” explained Dee Ann Wilcox, co-owner of the camp and its location, Rev It Up Sports and Fitness. “Inviting the Berlin fire company was a perfect fit. Their team embodies everything we want our campers to admire and aspire to be.”
Firefighters spent the morning teaching essential safety tips, including stop, drop and roll,” the importance of knowing family escape plans and how to identify safe exits in a fire emergency. The children were captivated by firefighters’ helmets and jackets, Wilcox said.

“Their faces lit up with awe and curiosity,” she noted. “Some kids proudly posed in helmets and jackets, saying things like ‘I feel like a real firefighter!’ It was a hands-on moment they’ll never forget, and for a few, it might have sparked a dream of becoming a firefighter one day.”
South Jersey’s Best Summer Camp blends education and fun during its 10-week program, which opened on June 23. Its themed weeks include activities that focus on building character, confidence and real-world skills.
“We blend play and purpose,” Wilcox said. “Every themed week has built-in ‘brain gain’ activities and meaningful moments that keep kids engaged and growing, while still having an absolute blast.”
Campers met with other first responders during superhero week, including the Berlin police and K-9 Clyde, and a speaker who focused on service in the Air Force. Wilcox said the camp’s goal is to create unforgettable experiences that reflect its mission: building confident, character-driven children through enriching experiences.
“We’re not just a camp,” she emphasized, “we’re a community. Our staff is trained in child development, and we put heart into everything we do.”
Wilcox also cited the fire personnel for their visit to camp.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Berlin fire company for taking the time to visit and inspire our campers,” she stated. “Your dedication, kindness and professionalism made a lasting impression. Thank you for being true heroes and for helping us create a week full of memories and meaning.”
