The Berlin Police Department took a step toward strengthening its force recently by hosting Phase 1 of its officer hiring process.

With approval from borough officials, the department accepted 47 applications over several weeks last month. After an initial review, 17 candidates who met the required qualifications advanced to a physical fitness examination.

During Phase 1 testing, candidates were challenged with a comprehensive series of assessments designed to measure strength, endurance and agility. The examination included a 1.5-mile run, a 300-meter sprint, one-minute maximum push-ups and sit-ups and a vertical jump. Each candidate was graded and scored on performance.

Police officials noted a standout achievement during the testing: Every applicant completed the physical fitness examination, with no candidates quitting or withdrawing early.

The police department expressed appreciation to the applicants, acknowledging the commitment it takes to pursue a career in law enforcement. It will continue its multi-phase hiring process.
