The streets of Berlin Borough and Berlin Township will once again come alive with red, white, and blue as the town prepares for its beloved Independence Day tradition: the annual 4th of July Parade. This cherished community celebration dates back to the early 1940s, originally created by the Berlin Rotary Club to honor the birth of America and pay tribute to local military heroes.
For the past 75 years, the parade has been more than just marching bands and waving flags—it’s been a symbol of unity and pride. On July 20, 1949, the Rotary Club officially formed a nonprofit to oversee the event: the Inter-Community Civic Association of Berlin and West Berlin. That name changed in 2016 to the Inter-Community Celebration Association (ICCA), but the mission remains the same: to bring the community together.
Today, the ICCA is led by President Brian Dorflinger, who, like many of his fellow board members, grew up watching the parade as a child and now works to ensure that future generations enjoy the same experience. “Our volunteer members grew up going to the parade with their parents,” Dorflinger shared. “Now we work year-round to bring a successful parade to our own children and grandkids.”
With about 10 dedicated volunteer board members, the ICCA meets throughout the year to coordinate the event. Funding comes largely from generous local businesses who sponsor the parade’s main attractions, including marching bands and entertainment. “Without them, the parade would not march down the street,” Dorflinger said. “We’re so grateful for their continued support.”
As a thank you, the ICCA places sponsorship signs in front of participating businesses—small reminders of the big role these local establishments play in keeping the tradition alive.
But even with this support, the ICCA is calling on the wider community to get involved.
From scout troops to local churches, dance groups to athletic teams, everyone is invited to participate in this year’s parade. Whether you want to ride a float, march with your organization, cruise your classic car, or join the kids’ Patriotic Bike Decorating Contest, there’s a place for you in this hometown tradition.
“Do you have a group, a team, a business—or just a bunch of friends?” Dorflinger asks. “Decorate a trailer in red, white, and blue, fill out a registration form, and be part of the fun.”
The Classic and Exotic Car Contest is also returning. Proud car owners are invited to polish up their prized vehicles and cruise down Haddon Avenue and White Horse Pike to cheers and admiration from the crowd.
The ICCA is also looking for volunteers to help bring the event to life. A volunteer meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 25 at 7 p.m. at the West Berlin Fire Department.
“If you love this parade like we do, and you want to be a part of something special, we’d love your help,” said Dorflinger.
