The Monroe Township Public Schools (MTPS) Board of Education reviewed the township’s Spring 2026 state assessment results at the latest board of education meeting on October 15.

At the start of the meeting, the MTPS assistant superintendent, Stanley Krzyminski, shared a presentation with the board and public attendees reviewing the results of the township, county and state. The results were individually measured and compared to previous years.

Students participated in the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment-Adaptive, (NJGPA-A) New Jersey Student Learning Assessments-Adaptive (NJSLA-a) and New Jersey Student Learning Assessment-Science (NJSLA-S).

The assessments were conducted virtually statewide in Spring 2026. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, the English language arts (ELA) and math assessments shifted to be administered in an adaptive format, meaning the questions online will either produce increasingly more difficult or easier questions based on how a student performs on previous questions. This is intended to measure student proficiency with each grade’s skills and concepts.

Monroe Township’s data includes ELA results from grades 3 through 9, math results from grades 3 through 8 and science results from grades 5, 8 and 11. Science testing did not switch to an adaptive format. NJGPA testing was only taken by grade 11 students, and it was completed in one day.

NJGPA testing is given to grade 11 students to measure their level of graduation readiness in ELA and math; grade 11 also participated in the NJSLA science test. In math, grade 11 students tested 53% as graduation ready. In ELA, students tested 76% as graduation ready.

On the NJSLA science test, grade 11 tested 12% proficient, grade 8 tested 14% proficent and grade 5 tested 20% profiecient.

For NJSLA-A, grades 3 through 9 tested 49% proficient in ELA and 39% proficient in math.

Krzyminski shared MTPS’s biggest strengths and areas for improvement.

Grade 3 scored ahead of the average state percentages in ELA and math. Grade 3 is 11% higher than grade 3 in the state, and grade 3 is 9% higher than grade 3 in the state.

Grade 8 scored 12% ahead of the average state percentages for math. There also was grade 8 ELA growth in MTPS.

Nearly all grade 8 students in algebra I (63 out of 64) met expectations on the exam.

There were notable differences among race. MTPS found there was growth for Black students in ELA and math. The median growth in ELA to 57% and 46% were each above the average for white students, which averaged at 54% and 40%, respectively. Hispanic students averaged at 49% for ELA and 42% for math.

Lastly, grade 4 at Radix Elementary scored 58% in ELA and 55% in math, which was above the state, county and Whitehall Elementary.

Krzyminski also shared what MTPS needs to pay more attention to for future growth, with its biggest concern being the rate of chronic absenteeism, which is defined as missing 18 days of school, or 10% of the school year. Chronic absenteeism is impacting four of the six schools in MTPS. The struggling schools are on corrective action plans to improve attendance, which in turn can improve test scores.

MTPS also plans to give more attention to students at WHS in algebra I, grade 9 ELA, students with IEPs and students with economic and ethnic gaps.

To review the entire presentation and results, a livestream of the board of education meeting is available on the Monroe Township Public Schools Facebook page under the “Live” tab.

The next board of education meeting will be held on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m. at the District Administration Building.
