The Philadelphia 76ers NBA title expectations grew exponentially after they orchestrated an offseason for the ages.
In a couple of moves that still have basketball fans’ heads spinning, the Sixers landed erstwhile arch enemy Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in a stunning trade for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks.
Then, to the shock of many, they acquired the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and four-time NBA champion Lebron James via free agency.
The 41-year-old James played for the Los Angeles Lakers the previous eight years. Although he is not the uber-dominant player he once was, James is still a force to be reckoned with. The four-time regular season MVP averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game last season.
Brown, who won an NBA Finals MVP with the Celtics in 2024, is no slouch. Last season, with his former running mate Jayson Tatum recovering from an Achilles injury, Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.
He led Boston to the Number 2 seed in the playoffs. Ironically, they eventually lost to the Sixers 4-3 in the first round of the playoffs after coughing up a seemingly insurmountable 3-1 lead. Philly got swept in the second round by the New York Knicks, who eventually went on to win the NBA Championship over the San Antonio Spurs in five games.
Brown, who is the son of educators, went to the University of California, Berkeley. While in the NBA, according to an article by Gilbert McGregor for The Sporting News, Brown “became the youngest person to deliver a lecture at Harvard, … and has delivered a Ted Talk at MIT.”
In the realm of truth being stranger than fiction, it’s been reported that one of the reasons Brown was traded is because his intelligence is seen as a “disease” in some basketball circles.
His commitment to helping uplift under-resourced communities will make him a valuable asset on and off the court in the Philadelphia region.
The Sixers starting lineup looks almost unstoppable—on paper. Budding superstars Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe are the guards, Brown and James are the forwards, and manning the middle is Joel “The Process” Embiid.
Philadelphia also retooled its bench. The Sixers parted ways with players such as Kelly Oubre, Andre Drummond, and Kyle Lowry—who signed a special contract to retire as a Toronto Raptor concluding a 20-year NBA career.
The Sixers added Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Anfernee Simons, and Dean Wade. All three veteran players have proven their worth as valuable scorers and defenders in the league.
They also selected guard Labaron Philon Jr., out of Alabama, with the 22nd pick in the 2026 NBA draft. He is expected to provide a much-needed scoring punch off the bench.
The 76ers have not reached the Eastern Conference Finals since 2001, when Allen Iverson was in his heyday. That blue-collar team made it all the way to the finals but lost to the Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers in five.
Philly last won an NBA Championship in 1983. That team featured Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Moses Malone, Billy Cunningham, and the rest of the crew.
James, who chose to play for the Sixers rather than take his talents to the Miami Heat, New York Knicks, and his “hometown” team the Cleveland Cavaliers, among others, has his sights set on winning a fifth ring.
“I was looking forward to another challenge, and this is a challenge,” the 24-year veteran said in an interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia.
“This is a franchise that hasn’t won a championship since 1983,” he said. “But the fans are hungry, the players are hungry, and I hope that I can implement some of the things that I’ve learned throughout my career to a franchise that’s ready to make that next step.”
One of the reasons James decided to become a 76er is his close relationship with Maxey. They are both represented by Klutch Sports Group, which was founded by Rich Paul, James’ long-time friend.
Maxey continues to rise up the ranks as one of the best players in the game. The speedster scored 28.3 points, dished out 6.6 assists, and grabbed 4.1 rebounds per game last season. He earned his first All-NBA honors, last season, after being named to the All-NBA third team.
The 6-foot-2-inch guard expressed excitement during his media day session while discussing James’ presence on the team.
“His being here is really cool, really cool. I think he’s going to be good for our team, good for the organization, good for the city,” Maxey said. “He’s someone who’s done it before, who’s won before. He talks about getting one-percent better like I do and he’s going to uplift the whole entire team, entire organization.”
Many media pundits seem concerned that Edgecombe’s progression as a player will be stunted by the acquisitions of James and Brown. The second-year player was a breath of fresh air for the Sixers last season.
He averaged 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in his first season. Edgecombe dazzled crowds with a multitude of electrifying dunks. He is also a fearless defender. Although his role may change, don’t expect Edgecombe’s play to precipitously drop.
The biggest question for the Sixers is and always has been will Embiid stay healthy for an entire season, including the playoffs? The star-crossed center has, over his 13-year career, dealt with a plethora of injuries that boggle the mind.
Embiid has suffered two orbital fractures, multiple meniscus tears, and Bell’s palsy the last several years, plus more. Last year, he had to get an emergency appendectomy just before the playoffs began. The man with the 7-foot-5-inch wingspan has played only a total of 86 regular season games in the past three seasons.
However, when he’s healthy, the Cameroonian native is one of the best basketball players in the world. In limited game-time action, Embiid posted a 26.9 point, 7.7 rebound, and 3.9 assist per game stat line during the 2025-26 regular season. If he can make it through the season injury free, the Sixers chances of winning a title substantially increase.
More questions abound surrounding this team.
Will Head Coach Nick Nurse get the team to buy into his scheme? Also, is Nurse, in his fourth year as Sixers coach, capable of persuading his star players to sacrifice individual goals for the benefit of the team? Are the Sixers with all their talent, finally going to win an NBA Championship or at least make it past the second round of the playoffs?
We’ll find out soon enough. The NBA regular season for the 76ers begins against the defending champion Knicks Tuesday, October 20 at Madison Square Garden.
